The coronavirus pandemic has not prevented Italian city cars, the Fiat Panda and the Fiat 500, from the leadership in their class on the European market.
According to sales figures in H1 2020, the Panda and the Cinquecento are well ahead of the Toyota Aygo, which is currently the third.
Of course, the great results of these two models have become possible thanks to the domestic market. In Italy itself, they are unconditional bestsellers. Moreover, Fiat once planned to leave only the Panda and the 500 in Europe, as well as commercial models. The automaker intended to sell the rest of the lineup outside the European continent.
Why are these cars so in demand? First of all, thanks to a large number of modifications: from regular hatchbacks to EVs and hybrids.
Besides, off-road versions add the popularity. For example, the Fiat 500X crossover is sold well not only in Europe but also abroad, particularly in the United States. The Fiat Panda Cross has also expanded the range of potential customers.
The TOP 10 most popular city cars in Europe, apart from the Italian models and the Toyota Aygo, includes today the Renault Twingo, Volkswagen Up !, Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Peugeot 108, Citroën C1 and the Mitsubishi Mirage.
By the way, the Toyota Aygo, the Peugeot 108 and the Citroën C1 are related models, jointly designed by Toyota and PSA.
