Ford plans a thorough redesign of the Mondeo: it will have a new shape and stature, raised ground clearance and a hi-tech interior.
A prototype for the new-generation model hit the road in production bodywork for the first time. The next Ford Mondeo adopts crossover-style design cues.
Exterior tweaks include a thin light strip, a wide honeycomb grille at the front; a sloping roofline and prominent lip across the boot lid at the rear.
Inside, buttons and switches are replaced by a digital infotainment screen across the width of the dash.
The Mondeo Mk5 will switch from a coil-spring rear suspension setup to a transverse leaf spring rear axle.
It means Ford makes room for a hybrid system. However, it is still unclear if the vehicle will be available only with electrified powertrains.
In summer 2020, the company took the model out of production in the USA, where it was sold under the Fusion name.
Meantime, Ford plans to launch the new-gen Mondeo in Europe in late 2021, so expect unveiling within the next few months.
